Biography

Colin is Joint CEO of Fluxmans Attorneys and head of its Business Rescue & Insolvency Department. He is also a director in the litigation department.

Colin has been lauded in various reputable publications including Chambers and Partners, which lists globally renowned lawyers and law firms and which notes that he “is a highly regarded lawyer with a particularly notable reputation for his contentious work in the restructuring and insolvency field” and that his peers recognise him as a “a first-class insolvency litigator”.

Colin is one of South Africa’s leading insolvency, business rescue and litigation attorneys with extensive experience in corporate and commercial-related litigation, High Court litigation and insolvency and insolvency-related law, including inquiries and interrogations, business restructuring and turnaround. Colin has managed, from start to finish, a number of high profile business rescues in the banking, retail, steel and mining sectors.

He offers cross-border expertise to a wide range of clients, including but not limited to, listed groups, banks, liquidators/trustees and aggrieved creditors in insolvency matters.

He is currently the Chairman of SARIPA’s North Gauteng region, a director on SARIPA’s main board, a member of INSOL and a member of TMA.

In addition to his active practice, he is frequently interviewed on air and in print publications and has regular articles published in leading magazines and newspapers.

Colin presided from 1993 to 2001 as a Commissioner in the Small Claims Court in the magisterial districts of both Johannesburg and Randburg.

He was also, for approximately 13 years, the South African representative of Bank Leumi Le Israel, a foreign international bank which had a presence in the Republic of South Africa. He held this position until it surrendered its South African licence.

In 2003 Colin merged his practice of Kallmeyer & Strime with Fluxmans Inc. Since then he has headed the Fluxmans division and thereafter on the promulgation of the new Companies Act, its business rescue division. He was appointed Joint CEO of Fluxmans in 2020.

Colin obtained his B.Proc. degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1979 where he was awarded the Law Society Prize by the Faculty of Law for “the most outstanding student enrolled for the degree of B.Proc. each year” in each of the Universities of the Transvaal.

His knowledge spans the full range of issues in this space, such as joint ventures, restructurings and M&A”, Ira needs little introduction in legal circles. 

A highly respected corporate and commercial lawyer with international and local clients across all sectors, Ira is known for his leadership skills and prodigious legal expertise.  

Prior to joining Fluxmans, Ira was a founding shareholder of a niche corporate finance house where he advised corporate clients and high net worth individuals. He then returned to mainstream corporate and commercial law where he continues to thrive and excel. 

In addition to his busy practice and the management of the firm, Ira regularly shares his vast knowledge on podcasts for various leading publications and in interviews. 

His areas of expertise include mergers and acquisitions, stock exchange listings, tax structuring, 2008 Companies Act, broad-based black economic empowerment, capital raising, asset and business acquisitions and disposals, corporate formations and structuring, all forms of commercial and business contracts, management buy-outs, private equity and venture capital, schemes of arrangement, share buy backs, estate planning, drafting of trusts and wills, share incentive schemes, security arrangements, distribution, licensing and supply arrangements and other trade agreements. 

In his day-to-day practice, Ira advises on all aspects of mergers and acquisitions and disposals of businesses and assets by entities, including cross border transactions, related regulatory issues (such as the Takeover Regulation Panel Code and exchange control), private equity transactions, general corporate and commercial law, corporate re-financings and restructuring, preparation and negotiation of all types of agreements, estate planning, drafting of trusts and wills, duties and responsibilities of directors and officers, and other corporate governance aspects, as well as general commercial matters. 

Ira obtained his B.Com. and LL.B. (with distinction) degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was appointed Joint Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Fluxmans in 2020.
